MINE SUPERINTENDENT

 

Location: Hemlo Operations, Marathon, Ontario

  • Open to Canadian Residents
  • 8 shifts-on / 6 shifts-off (days and nights)
  • Travel eligibility: DIDO or FIFO

 

The Opportunity:

 

The Underground Mine Superintendent is responsible for the safe, efficient, and productive execution of all underground mining operations at the project site. This leadership role ensures that development, production, and services activities are carried out in accordance with contractual obligations, safety standards, and operational targets.

 

The Superintendent provides direct oversight of daily activities, working in close collaboration with shift supervisors, technical services, maintenance, and HSE teams to drive performance, manage resources, and uphold the company’s commitment to safety and operational excellence. Acting as a key liaison between the project team and client representatives, the Superintendent ensures alignment on production priorities, addresses emerging issues, and fosters a culture of accountability, teamwork, and continuous improvement.

 

This role is instrumental in setting and maintaining high standards of execution, supervision, and workforce engagement while ensuring full compliance with legislative requirements, internal procedures, and client expectations.

 

More specifically, our Mine Superintendent will:

 

Safety, Health & Environmental Compliance

  • Promote and enforce a strong safety culture by ensuring adherence to company policies, site procedures, and all applicable legislation.
  • Lead by example through visible, safety-first leadership and active participation in inspections, audits, toolbox meetings, and incident investigations.
  • Identify and mitigate risks associated with underground mining activities and ensure all corrective actions are completed in a timely manner.
  • Support the implementation of site-specific safety initiatives and continuous improvement in safety performance.

 

Operational Leadership & Execution

  • Provide direct oversight and coordination of underground operations including development, production, services, backfilling, and ground support.
  • Ensure mining activities are executed to plan, on schedule, and within budget while maintaining operational efficiency and quality standards.
  • Conduct routine underground visits to assess performance, provide support to frontline leaders, and verify compliance with work standards.
  • Monitor daily shift reports, equipment utilization, and material usage to identify trends and ensure operational targets are being met.

 

Workforce Management & Supervision

  • Lead, coach, and mentor Forepersons, Shift Supervisors and underground crews to ensure high levels of performance, accountability, and team morale.
  • Participate in workforce planning, crew scheduling, onboarding, training, and competency verification.
  • Address performance issues through consistent application of company policies, performance evaluations, and support of progressive discipline processes.
  • Promote a respectful and inclusive workplace aligned with company values and behavioural expectations.

 

Client & Stakeholder Engagement

  • Maintain strong working relationships with client representatives through regular communication, progress reporting, and collaborative problem-solving.
  • Support client audits and area inspections by providing detailed operational information and ensuring the workplace meets client expectations.
  • In collaboration with the Project Manager, ensure contractual obligations related to scope, productivity, and compliance are consistently met or exceeded.

 

Planning & Coordination

  • Work closely with the Project Manager and Technical Services team to align daily operations with short- and long-term mine plans.
  • Contribute to the development of production forecasts, schedules, and resource allocation plans.
  • Coordinate with maintenance and supply chain teams to optimize equipment availability and ensure timely access to required materials and consumables.

 

Skills and Experience:

  • Strong operational knowledge in mine Jumbo development, production drilling/blasting, ground support, and ventilation systems
  • Previous experience within a mining contractor environment preferred
  • Proficient understanding of mine planning software and production tracking systems is preferred
  • Demonstrated ability to lead teams and manage performance across all levels of employee development 

 

Education, Qualifications and Training

  • Minimum 10 years of underground hard rock mining experience, with at least 5 years in a superintendent or equivalent leadership role
  • Valid Ontario Supervisor Common Core ticket
  • Underground Common Core or equivalent training certification

 

Physical Requirements

  • Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 lbs unassisted.
  • Frequent bending, stooping, crouching, twisting, reaching, and other physical movements required.
  • Must have full use of hands, arms, and legs for manual tasks and equipment operation.
  • Ability to differentiate colours and detect visual/auditory cues in low-light, high-noise environments.
  • Work involves exposure to extreme heat, cold, humidity, dust, diesel fumes, and vibration.
  • Must work in confined underground spaces and wear full PPE at all times.
  • Requires 12-hour shifts and extended periods underground during remote, rotational schedules.
