POSITION PURPOSE

The Health, Safety, and Training (HST) Superintendent plays a critical role in maintaining compliance, fostering a safety-first culture, and enhancing training systems at Barminco’s underground mining operations in Ontario. This position ensures the effective implementation of safety programs, alignment with Ontario OH&S regulations, and leadership of the HST team to achieve Barminco’s strategic objectives of delivering safe, reliable and efficient underground mining services for our clients.

 

POSITION OBJECTIVES

  • Lead and mentor the site Health, Safety, and Training team to ensure effective delivery of safety and training programs that promote a strong safety culture.
  • Act as the key advisor to senior management, clients and stakeholders on HSE matters, identifying risks, proposing mitigations, and ensuring compliance with company policies, client safety plans and regulatory requirements.
  • Maintain expert knowledge of Ontario OH&S regulations and ensure compliance with all provincial and federal requirements.
  • Develop, implement, and monitor site-specific safety plans, policies, and risk management initiatives.
  • Manage incident investigations, particularly for Serious Potential Incidents, using advanced methodologies such as ICAM.
  • Oversee the design, delivery, and evaluation of training programs, ensuring alignment with operational needs and regulatory requirements.
  • Collaborate with operational leaders and client teams to identify and address training and competency gaps.
  • Ensure effective, timely classification, reporting, and communication of safety incidents, with a focus on learning and improvement.
  • Analyze HSE performance data to identify trends, improve safety metrics and provide actionable insights.
  • Conduct regular site inspections, audits, and risk assessments to identify hazards and implement corrective actions.

SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE & EXPERIENCE

  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience in underground mining operations required, preferably in a contract environment.
  • Expert knowledge of Ontario OH&S regulations and underground mining safety systems.
  • Proven leadership and mentoring experience within a safety and training team.
  • Advanced skills in incident management and root cause analysis methodologies (e.g., ICAM).
  • Strong communication skills, including the ability to present safety and training information effectively.
  • Demonstrated ability to build relationships and collaborate with cross-functional teams and clients.

EDUCATION, QUALIFICATIONS & TRAINING

  • Bachelor’s degree in mining engineering or safety related field preferred, but not required
  • Formal qualifications in Occupational Health and Safety in Mining, or a related field.
  • Certifications in safety auditing, risk assessment, or training systems, such as CRM, CRP, CHSC, and/or ISO Lead Auditor Training referred but not required.
  • Mining Common Core certification (Ontario, NORCAT or equivalent) preferred.
  • Prior experience and/or training in Indigenous Cultural Awareness Training preferred.
  • Must hold a current valid Ontario Manual Driver’s License.
  • Must hold current authorization to work in Canada
