The Opportunity: Barminco Mining Services Canada Ltd. has new exciting opportunities for Underground Shift Supervisor at the Red Chris Mine in northern British Columbia.  Working a FIFO rotation of 14-shifts on and 14-shifts off.  Reporting to the Project Manager (or designate), the Shift Supervisor is responsible for ensuring the safety of all underground personnel and day to day activities in the underground mine. The Shift Supervisor is expected to do this through effective planning, supervision, leadership, and knowledge, with a focus on safety, quality of work and communication.

 

Position Responsibilities (including but not limited to):

  • Ensure full understanding and compliance with company policies/procedures and work in accordance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and other local regulatory agencies to promote safe work behaviour.
  • Supervise and lead the day to day activities and development mining of the primary underground access decline.
  • Train/mentor others in hard rock underground mining best practices.
  • Conduct daily pre-shift meetings to ensure employees are informed of safety and operational issues.
  • Bring and maintain a high standard of work; with regards to installation of rock support (bolts, screen, shotcrete, cable bolts), as well as house keeping, mine services and auxiliary infrastructure.
  • Be able to plan and co-ordinate mining equipment and activities efficiently to meet the needs of the mine plan.
  • Ensure all employees have the knowledge to work safely and efficiently by giving all employees job specific instructions on a daily basis, have appropriate training where needed and monitoring their progress
  • Complete supervisor checks including; inspecting log books and safety cards of workers, workplace inspections and audits.
  • Complete and maintain accurate daily development reports, data logging and documentation.
  • Sufficient knowledge to make sound decisions when encountering work condition changes.
  • Ensure all equipment is in good repair, have broken equipment scheduled for repair and make equipment available to mechanics when it is scheduled for preventative maintenance.
  • Ensure that any equipment deemed damaged or unsafe by virtue of a defect, or a machine of which any protection system is inoperative, is not used and communicated to the Project Manager and/or Maintenance Foreman
  • Inspect existing work areas to ensure the workplace is safe and assigned tasks can be executed safely and to design specifications.
  • Immediately report problems and lead or assist in incident investigation as required.
  • Maintain a professional and courteous relationship with employees and business partners.
  • You will be expected to operate underground equipment and assist with crew activities in initial stages of mine growth/development.

 

Skills and Experience:

  • Previous experience as a development shift supervisor in an underground hard rock mine
  • Must hold and maintain valid BC ShiftBoss certification (BC), or be able to obtain
  • Maintain valid First Aid certification and Transportation Endorsement
  • Read and understand mining instructions
  • Able to effectively prioritize workload/activities.
  • The ability to work in a fast-paced, rapidly changing, cross-cultural environment with high degree of professionalism, leadership, and self-motivation.
  • Thorough knowledge and understanding of the Occupational Health & Safety Act and Regulations
  • Must hold and maintain a valid Driver’s License; manual transmission experience an asset
  • Effective and respectful communication skills with individuals at all levels of the organization, both verbal and written
  • Computer skills; Microsoft Word & Microsoft Excel.
  • Ability to analyze, resolve problems and make decisions in a logical and effective manner
  • Ability to be organized while simultaneously managing multiple job assignments
  • Strong commitment to be a team player, build trust, be accountable and hold crews accountable.
  • Leading and mentoring those around you through the Barminco principles.

       Work Conditions

  • Ability to do shift camp work on a rotational basis (dayshift/nightshift), typically the rotations are 2 weeks on site (minimum 12-hour days), followed by 2 weeks off – working statutory holidays as they fall within the rotation 
  • While performing the duties of this position, the employee is frequently required to communicate, sit, stand, walk, climb, reach, push/pull, manipulate objects and work in awkward positions
  • Duties may involve moving materials weighing up to 50 pounds
  • Manual dexterity and good eye-hand coordination are required
  • Extreme weather conditions
  • Noise level in the work environment is moderate to high
